Professor Rong Fu, Director of JIFRESSE, Receives the AMS Carl-Gustaf Rossby Research Medal

Professor Rong Fu, Director of JIFRESSE, has been selected to receive the 2026 American Meteorological Society (AMS) Carl-Gustaf Rossby Research Medal, the Society's highest honor for atmospheric science research. The medal citation recognizes her:

“For pioneering observational insights into the atmospheric water cycle and land-atmosphere coupling, advancing understanding of precipitation, drought and fire weather, and for exceptional scientific leadership.”

This prestigious award honors individuals whose research has fundamentally advanced our understanding of the atmosphere, climate system, and their interactions. The formal presentation of the medal will take place at the 107th AMS Annual Meeting, to be held January 10-14, 2027, in Denver, Colorado.

This recognition is a testament not only to Rong's extraordinary scientific accomplishments and visionary leadership, but also to the strength and impact of the Earth and climate science community at UCLA. Through her pioneering research, mentorship, and service to the scientific community, Rong has helped shape the direction of the field while elevating the visibility and reputation of both JIFRESSE and UCLA on the national and international stage.
